Another one for you--harking back to my early days as a writing tutor!
When I first went to the University of Western Ontario as a graduate
student, there was a writing lab administered by the English department.
I don't know how long that had existed. It was dismantled in the early
1990s and replaced by a writing centre (called the Effective Writing
Program), under the auspices of Student Services, in 1996.

Hi Wendy
Ramona Montagnes tells me in response to my (your) question that she
and Ian Fairclough established the Writing Centre at UBC in 1992.
Originally, it was under the Faculty of Arts but because the courses
are non-credit, it was moved to Continuing Studies.
Cheers

Wendy, I was the English Language Specialist when Michael began the
Effective Writing Programme in August 1996. We took over from the
Writing Lab in the English Department, but I don't know exactly how long
that had been going. My guess is 8-10 yeaers. Roger Graves will
probably have better access to that information now than I do as he is
currently the Writing Programme Director at Western. Theresa.

I have a senate document that refers to "Effective Writing and Counselling and Career Development" dated October 28, 1982. It would seem that this unit existed at that time. I don't have any documents about the Writing Lab in English; the Writing Program here is no longer part of the English department.

Just to be clear, it is my understanding that UWO has a Writing Program, which delivers degree-level courses, and an Effective Writing Program that is part of the Student Development Centre and what most of us would consider a 'writing centre'.

I hope I can clarify a few things with regard to writing at UWO. There is a
distinction between UWO’s Writing Department in the Faculty of Arts and the
Effective Writing Program in the Student Development Centre. In 1996,
Michael Sider established The SDC’s Effective Writing Program, which houses
The Writing Centre. Its mandate is to provide a service to Western students,
faculty, and staff in the area of writing. In contrast, the Writing
Department (which will soon be renamed Writing and Technical & Professional
Communication) is responsible for all aspects of credit courses in writing
as dictated by UWO’s central administration.

Jana Weerasinghe has coordinated The SDC’s Effective Writing Program since
2002. For more information please see the website www.sdc.uwo.ca/writing/.
