Ours (Atkinson) started in 1983. The Centre in the Faculty of Arts at York is
older; it probably started in the early 1970s.

Hi, Wendy --

U of T always likes to claim it was first! Innis College and Woodsworth
College started a couple of "writing labs" in the early 1970s -- I've
been told 1972. Now we have at least 14 units, though called a lot of
different names and doing a wide range of teaching (there's a list of

Happy Birthday.

Actually our program in Engineering Communication Program in Toronto is also
10 yrs old this year. Our college writing centres are generally much older,
but someone with a longer institutional memory/historical knowledge would have
to tell you just how old.

This is an interesting question, Wendy.
I am also wondering, watching the list of responses grow, if anyone
knows of
a university, other than SFU, which does not have a writing centre? Or
even
another post-secondary institution?
Janet Giltrow and Michelle Valiquette began writing centre work at SFU
around 1987 I think, (I'll check that) and the unit itself was
dismantled
around 1999/2000, about to be resurrected this year...or next...we
hope...we're waiting for it!

I wish I could have visited the Writing Center when I stopped to walk
around the StFX campus last summer. At Stanford, we started our Writing
Center in 2001, so it's one of the "youngsters" in the U.S.

the last five years. I also believe that Royal Roads was looking into
starting one as we had a representative from their visit our writing

The StFX Writing Centre is celebrating its 10th year this year. Our

campus newspaper editor is wondering how old we are in comparison to
other centres. Could you tell me what year YOUR writing centre was
established?

yes, too bad you weren't able to drop in.
Thanks for your information... I'll add it to the list. Frankly I am
surprised at "your" age! Writing Centres seem so firmly entrenched in
the States

I wish I could have visited the Writing Center when I stopped to walk
around the StFX campus last summer. At Stanford, we started our Writing

Center in 2001, so it's one of the "youngsters" in the U.S.

The TRU (formerly UCC) Writing Centre opened in 1996, but in preparation
Susan Bell and I conducted a somewhat informal national review of
writing centres in 1995.

Henry, when I click on the link below, I don't get a survey--all I
get is the Writing Centre homepage. I hunted all over it, clicked on
everything, and can't find this survey report--could you perhaps just
send me a copy as an email attachment? I'd really like to see it
ASAP. Our Writing Task Force is looking at writing centres all over
North America, but we're of course especially interested in
Canada--Wendy K. has sent one of our Task Force members, Dave
Clyburn, lots of her data (thanks, Wendy!) and he'll be giving a
report on Writing Centres to the Task Force on Feb. 9th. But it
would be helpful to see the survey you guys did over 10 years ago, to
get a sense of what has changed since then.
I've been gathering all the recent emails about when Writing Centres
were established--thanks for asking the question, Wendy--and keep 'em
coming, folks!

You've started a whole research project here! Has anybody answered for
the University of Waterloo? I have a document from 1978 that talks about
the English Language Proficiency Program as consisting of "a two-part
diagnostic test in basic language skills" and "a Writing Clinic that
provides individual instruction." The Writing Clinic (it may now be
known as a W. Centre) trains students to take that test. Waterloo made
the news recently because it re-imposed that test on all entering
students. This is a conjunction that we old-timers will recognize.

Hello all
I was sorta hoping that someone else besides me would reply from Waterloo.
But of course there is a writing center here--but for what ever reason no
one in the center appears to connect to groups like this one.

Over the years I have tried very hard to get the group to connect but
without success.

The center operates a large test that most students are required to take as
well offering tutorial services and workshops.

I had almost abandoned the search for a WTS at Carleton in a 1978 - 1979 university calendar I happen to have. However, at page 89 it indicates that within the Department of English Language and LIterature there was a Writing Tutorial Service. Aviva Freedman is listed within that group.
